Our Story
More than fifty years ago, in the heart of Mexico City, five people gathered to make mole together. Among them was my grandfather, Guillermo Cruz. What began in shared labor and long, heat-filled days became the foundation of something enduring.
The company they built eventually separated — as things sometimes do. Each went their own way. My grandfather continued. By the early 1980s, Monarca existed.
I grew up in San Diego. When my grandparents visited, my grandfather came with me to soccer practice. He sat on the sidelines. He stayed until it was over. The smell of mole always followed him — warm, deep, unmistakable. As a child, I did not understand what I was carrying.
He passed in 2017. Seven years later, in 2024, I returned to the maquiladora. I stood where he had stood. I touched what he had touched. The machines were loud. The room was hot. The smell was exactly the same. I did not need anyone to explain anything.
Monarca USA exists because he existed. Because of the work he carried so others could move forward. I am doing this so what he built does not disappear quietly.
